Born with cerebral palsy, one of 8 kids in a one-bathroom house in Detroit, John suffered through childhood with Frankenstein shoes, never-ending physical therapy, and constant teasing due to cerebral palsy. Undeterred, John joined the US Navy, and for 20 years, kept his disability a secret, while rising with honors to the rank of senior chief petty officer. John set the standard of excellence while serving onboard aircraft carriers, battleships and destroyers.

After retiring from the Navy, John wrote a highly-acclaimed book – Someone Like Me – about his experience in the Navy, keeping his disability a secret, and triumph over cerebral palsy. John is now a featured national motivational speaker who talks about rising through the ranks in the Navy while keeping his disability a secret, while sharing keen insights on overcoming life challenges and his personal thoughts on inclusion
